What is a metaphor? • a way of describing something by comparing it to something else that has similar qualities, without using the words “like” or “as” Voldemort is a snake!
What is a simile? • an expression that describes something by comparing it with something else, using the words “as” or “like” Harry Potter’s eyes are as green as emeralds. She is running like the wind.
When do you use a metaphor and when a simile? • There are no rules. • You decide on whether to use a metaphor or a simile depending on what you want to say.
Using figurative language • Exercise One: • Using metaphors and similes, write 5 sentences about a famous person WITHOUT revealing the person’s name. • Read your description to the class and let your classmates try to guess who it is. • Exercise Two • Examine your descriptive paragraph about your secret classmate to find passages that could be changed to include metaphors and similes.
