The Love that Endures All Things(1 Corinthians 13:4-7, 13; Luke 4:16-30)
When nothing goes right How to mess up my 3-day trip to Boston: • 1) I got up about one hour late after my scheduled time. • 2) I stubbed my toes and tripped. • 3) The milk on my cereal was sour. • 4) I had to search for my wallet everywhere in my room. • 5) I forgot to put water in the coffee pot. • 6) I left my cellphone at my home. • 7) I forgot to bring the adapter for my laptop. • It was still early morning, but I already felt very tired and just wanted to give up everything that I needed to do for the day.
Jesus endures trials The Good News and trials • Jesus proclaims to his hometown folks: • “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor“” (vv. 18-19). • Yet, people began to dig at Jesus’ identity: “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” (v. 22) • “How dare he declare to us that he is God’s Messiah? … Who does he think he is, announcing himself as God’s big shot?” • The jealousy, anger, and rejection were definitely present in their response.
Jesus’ teaching and people’s rejection • Their hearts were not yet open to Jesus’ message: “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet’s hometown” (v. 24). • Jesus reminded them how their great prophets Elijah and Elisha helped the Gentiles (the widow of Zarephath in Sidon and Naaman the Syrian) (vv. 25-28) – being humble and obeying God’s command. • They didn’t want to hear Jesus’ lesson. • “They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him down the cliff” (vv. 28-29). • About three years later, the crowds would eventually lead him to another hill called “Golgotha” where they crucified and killed him on the cross.
How and why Jesus endured all trials? • After he revealed himself as the Messiah, Jesus came to experience that things in his life didn’t go right for him– frustration and hurt!!! • Jesus had never given up his salvation ministry; he had never turned against people; he had never blown up hope of God’s kingdom in the face of adversity. • How and why? • Jesus loved people so much that he could endure all things!
Love never fails What is Love? • What kind of love do we want to have and share in our life? – something sweet, beautiful, and romantic. • “Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails” (vv. 4-7). • This Scripture is the most popular reading for a wedding ceremony – “Love never fails.”
Love endures all things • The problem – people like hearing love songs but fail to practice the love that endures all things. • Life is not easy at all: troubles and hardships can attack us anytime. • It is love that gives us courage and patience in times of trial. • It is love that strengthens us to stand strong in the time of despair and death. • It is love that enables us to speak words of truth to a questioning and sometimes hostile world. • It is love that enables us to overcome and endure all things in life. • The love we have from God never fails, never gives up, and never ends.
Remember Jesus’ love When nothing goes right… • The next time our day goes wrong, then let’s think of our friends who love us and whom we love. • The next time we are falsely accused or grossly ridiculed, let us think of Jesus’ life and remember that he endured much worse because he loved so much. • The next time we have one of those gloomy days, let’s remember we’re not alone. • Remember Jesus, remember he is now with us because he loves us. Amen.
