Breast (Mammary Gland)During Late Pregnancy The alveolar cells become secretory & the Alveoli and ducts enlarge Secretion of milk starts after parturition (birth) With progress in pregnancy, the amount of intralobular connective tissue decreasesand the amount of interlobular connective tissue increases (because of enlargement of the glandular tissue)
Breast (Mammary Gland)During Late Pregnancy • The alveoli are surrounded by flattened myoepithelial cells • Interlobular excretory ducts lie in the interlobular connective tissue
Breast (Mammary Gland)During Lactation • Lactating mammary gland contains large number of distended alveoli filled with secretions and vacuoles. • The alveoli show irregular branching patterns • Due to increase in size of Alveoli, the interlobular connective tissue septa reduces • Contraction of myoepithelial cells expels milk from the Alveoli into the excretory ducts
Breast (Mammary Gland)During Lactation • Active (Secretory) Alveoli: • Lined by low epithelium & filled with milk , appears as eosinophilic (pink) material with large vacuoles of dissolved fat droplets • Inactive Alveoli: • Empty lumen lined by tall epithelium
