  2. Jesus is God • Jesus forgives sin, complete authority Luke 5:18-24 • Jesus accepts worship Matthew 14:33 • Jesus says he is the “I AM” John 8:58 • He claimed to be, eternal John ?? • He is immortal John 2:19

  3. Jesus is Man • Virgin birth Matthew 1:18, 20 • Fully man yet without sin Luke 1:35, Hebrews 4:14 • Jesus had a human body Luke 2:52 • Jesus had a human mind Luke 2:52 • Jesus had human soul and emotions John 12:27, John 11:35, Matthew 8:10 • Incarnation – Jesus came in the flesh John 1:14

  4. Necessary to be the god man • If Jesus was not fully man, he could not have died in our place and paid the penalty that was for mankind. Hebrews 2:14, 16-17 • We need a mediator between us and God. 1 Timothy 2:5 • He is able to sympathize in our weaknesses. Hebrews 2:18 • Jesus will always be a man. Revelation 1:13 • To show that salvation is from the Lord Jonah 2:9 • Only someone without sin and infinite could fully remove sin and the penalty of others who are sinful in their nature. 2 Corinthians 5:21

  5. Heresy • Apollinarianism • Teaches that Jesus had human body but not human mind or spirit. (Mind and spirit were fully God) • Hebrews 2:17 can be used to refute Apollinarianism • Nestorianism • Teaches that there are two different persons in Christ. A human person and a divine person. • Jesus always refers to himself as “I” not “we” • Monophysitism • Teaches that one “new” nature. That Christ’s human nature was “absorbed” into his divine nature which produced a new nature (ink in water analogy). • If true salvation is not possible from Jesus

  6. Is Jesus a lesser god? • John 3:16 • Does “one and only” mean Jesus had beginning? • Colossians 1:15-17 • If Christ is the first born over creation was he created? • John 14:28 • If the Father is “greater than” Jesus, how can Jesus be fully God?

  7. Questions • Did Jesus give up some of his divine attributes while on Earth? Philippians 2:5-8 • Could Jesus have sinned?
