Vocabulary Art-Making- Techniques of the Impressionist Artist Apples - What’s the big deal? Impressionism=A theory/ style of painting developed in France during the 1870s, characterized by concentration on the immediate visual impression and by the use of unmixed primary colors and small strokes to simulate actual reflected light. Form=The shape and structure of an object. Composition=The combining of distinct parts or elements to form a whole. Design=A graphic representation. Color=The appearance of objects or light sources described in terms of the individual's perception of them, involving hue, lightness, and saturation for objects and hue, brightness, and saturation for light sources. Hue=The property of colors by which they can be perceived as ranging from red through yellow, green, and blue, as determined by the dominant wavelength of the light. Saturation=Vividness of hue; degree of difference from a gray of the same lightness or brightness. Also called intensity. Tone=A color or shade of color. • Short brush strokes • Quick brush strokes • Focus on general shape • Focus on color • Don’t think about what color you THINK it should be • Paint what you ACTUALLY see Cezanne used a lot of apples as his subject matter.
