Centaur’s Information • Centaurs are half horse half man • They are descendents of Centaurus • Centaurus was the son of Ixion • Their behavior was uncouth • Small amount of wine made them wild • The only Wise, not drunk centaur is Chiron • Who is also the only immortal Centaur • They symbolize the struggle between good and evil in every heart.

  5. Centaur’s Relatives • Centaurus was the father of the Centaurs • Ixion was the grandfather of the Centaurs • The cloud Nymph was their grandmother

Centaur Myths • Centaurs were the offspring of Ixion, the king of Lapithae, and the cloud Nymph • They are notorious for their bestial behavior at the wedding of Pirithous, the king of Lapith • During the wedding they threatened the bride and what followed was a bloody battle and were driven from Thessally except for Chiron, the teacher of Greek heroes Jason and Achilles

  11. Medusa Myths • Medusa used to be a mortal and she was very pretty. She thought Athena was jealous of her. So Athena cursed her by making her hair snakes, and making anyone who looks into her eyes turns to stone.

  19. Cerberus’s Information • Guarded the gates of the underworld to prevent ghosts from leaving • Was only defeated twice in his existance • Some say he has 50 heads while others say 100, but most agree on three

  21. Cerberus Myths • Hercules was sent to fetch Cerberus from the underworld as one of his twelve labors. He accomplished this task through the grace of Persephone.

  24. Gorgon’s Information • There were three gorgons • Euryale • Sthenno • Medusa • They have snake hair, impenetrable scales, brass hands, and sharp fangs • The heads of stone gorgons were usually placed or drawn on temples or graves to avert attacks from evil forces.

  27. Gorgon Myths • Persues set off onto an adventure to bring Medusa’s head back to Polydectes. He cut off her head with the help of Athena, Hermes boots, and Hades helmet. A Pegasus and Chrysaor came out of the blood of the gorgon’s decapitated head.

  30. Cyclopes’ Information • Gigantic and had great strength • Very violent minds • Giants with one round eye • Short tempered • Unsocial • Helped make instruments for Zeus • Most famous was Polyphemus • God of blacksmiths

  32. Cyclopes’ Relatives • Uranus( god of the sky ) was their father • Gaia ( mother Earth ) was their mother

  33. Cyclopes Myths • Odysseus is on his way back to Ithicawhen he lands on the Island of the Cyclops. He is then captured by the Cyclops and his men tried to help him. When the Cyclops asks for his name he says, “Nobody”. Therefor, when Odysseus attacks the Cyclops, the Cyclops says, “Nobody is attacking me!” So the other Cyclops doesn’t help him because they were tricked. In the end Odysseus and his men got away.

  38. Harpies Myths • In Jason and the Argonauts, Harpies were used to torture the Thracian King Phineus by pecking out his eyes and snatching the food from his table at every meal.

  43. Furies Myths Orestes had killed his mother in revenge for her part in murdering his father. This caused the Furies to pursue him. Orestes was protected by Apollo in his sacred shine, until the gods persuaded the Furies to allow Orestes to be tried by the Areopagus, an ancient court in the city of Athens. Athena calmed the anger of the furies who became known as the Eumenides(soothed ones) and protected Athens from harm.
