Who was Pura Belpré? • named after PuraBelpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library • born: 1899 or 1903 in Puerto Rico died: 1982 • writer, a collector of folktales (especially those from Puerto Rico), and a puppeteer
The first story she wrote and published was Pérez and Martina, a love story between a cockroach and a mouse. “In 1931, she authored perhaps the first book published in English in the U.S. by a Puerto Rican author, and certainly the first published by a major publishing house.”
She is best known for her work in the New York Public Library, where she pioneered the “library’s outreach within the Puerto Rican community.” • Her Spanish language, community and literary skills soon earned her a position as Hispanic Assistant in a branch of the public library at 135th Street in Harlem. • She became the first Puerto Rican to be hired by the New York Public Library.
