  2. Fertilization • The union of a sperm cell and an egg cell in the Fallopian tube is called fertilization or also known as conception. • After fertilization, the cell mass is called a placenta or zygote. • The placenta hen attaches itself to the uterine wall.

  3. The Trimesters of a Pregnancy • There are three main stages of the pregnancy. • Throughout the trimesters, the baby grows and develops.

  4. The First Trimester • In the first trimester, the embryo develops lungs, a brain, a heart, and it’s nervous system. • The arms, legs, toes, and external sex signs appear. • The embryo’s four chambers of the heart form.

  5. Second Trimester • In the second trimester, skin, fine hair, eyelashes develop, and nails appear. • The embryo is now called a Fetus. • The rate of growth slows and the heartbeat increases.

  6. Third Trimester • In the third trimester, the fetus’s eyes open, most organs are completing and skin is smooth. • Weighs about 6 to 9 pounds and 19 to 21 inches.

  7. Epidurals, Lamaze, and Episiotomy • When a mother is preparing to give birth, doctors stick a needle in the lower spine to num the area. This process is called an epidural. • Lamaze is the process which involves a psychologist to prepare the mother for birth. • When a doctor cuts the virginal canal to make the area bigger and easier on the mother is called an episiotomy.

  8. Braxton Hick Contractions and Agar Scale • During pregnancy, false contractions will prepare the mother for childbirth, these are called Braxton Hick Contractions. • Agar Scales are calculations on the newborns health a few minutes after birth.

  9. First, Second, and Third stages of Labor • There are three stages of labor, during these stages, three things take place. • The cervix dilates an enlarges to allow the baby to pass through. • The baby passes out of the vaginal cavity along with amniotic fluid. • The amniotic sac exits along with the rest of the umbilical cord.

  10. Types of Birth • If the baby comes out feet first, it is a breech birth. • If the baby comes out of the vaginal cavity regularly, it is a vaginal birth. • Sometimes it is less stress on the baby if it is born in water called a water birth. • When the fetus dies in the uterus during labor, it is called a stillbirth.

  11. Types of Birth • When the fetus comes out of the vaginal cavity too early and the organs are not fully developed, it is called a premature birth. • A cesarean birth is also called a C- section and is a operation to remove the baby by cutting through skin a muscle to remove it.

  12. Complications and Prenatal Care. • Some complications could be from natural causes or a miscarriage due to something that the mother did. • Prenatal care is very important because the baby could die or have other complications like down syndrome where the brain is slower at developing and the child is slower at walking and talking that other children.

  13. Gynecologists and Obstetricians • Gynecologists work with women during and before pregnancy when the female is maturing. • Obstetricians deal with women during and after pregnancy.
