  4. What does the customer want? • Does your letter reflect the position’s teaching/research split? • Does your seminar and discussion reflect the institution’s mission? • Don’t tell them they’re your back-up.

  5. Myths • Those who can’t do, teach. • Good researchers can’t teach. • Good teaching is intuitive.

  6. Things to do • Present and publish at every opportunity. • Don’t overlook trade publications and popular press. • Teach a course; don’t just TA.

  7. What I want for Cal Poly • Interest in teaching undergraduates. • Ability to • Engage students • Publish peer-reviewed and popular press articles • Generate industry support
