Implementation of DSP systems A tradeoff between microcontroller, DSP, FPGA and ASIC technologies Parameters • Area, speed, power, NRE cost, dev. Time • Microcontroller for simple apps • DSP for heavy number crunching • FPGA for ASIC proto and low volume • ASIC for high MIPS and large volumes
Course objectives Course objectives • The course on DSP teaches you what to design. The course on Digital System Design teaches you how to implement it in VHDL. This course teaches you how best to implement. • At the end of this course, students will be able to build real time systems that are optimized in terms of area, power and speed by applying various methodologies like pipelining, parallel processing, folding, unfolding and algorithm transformation.
Importance of course • Very essential if you plan to enter VLSI design industry. • Very essential if you plan to pursue PG in VLSI
Course syllabus • Course consists of 6 units • 1 Pipelining and parallel processing • 2 Retiming • 3 Unfolding • 4 Folding • 5 Fast convolution (Cook toom & Winograd) • 6 Cyclic and iterated convolution Prerequisites – Digital Signal Processing Linkages – Digital system design, DSP Processors • Requires analytical abilities
Assessment strategy • 80 marks for university paper • 20 marks internal assessment
