Identifying Minerals Density Streak Hardness
Today’s Goals… • Describe streak. • Recognize the hardness of a mineral. • Explain how streak and hardness can be used to identify an unknown mineral.
DENSITY… • Density is how closely packed together atoms are in a given volume of space. • Density is the amount of matter you have to fill in a specific space. • When there is more matter in a given space, it is more dense. Density = mass/volume

What is streak? On your foldable… Streak is the color of the powder of a mineral.
What is hardness? On your foldable… Hardness is a measure of the ability of a mineral to resist scratching.
Hardness Test Lab: • Try to scratch all four minerals with your fingernail. • Try to scratch a penny using all four minerals. • Try to scratch all four minerals with a nail.
