Japanese Aucuba, also known as Aucuba japonica, is an evergreen shrub with simple, lustrous, leathery leaves and rounded green stems. It features rare purple male flowers and reaches a height of 6 to 10 feet. The shrub has a dense upright rounded form and thrives in shade. One unique characteristic is that young leaves exposed to the sun will blacken.
