The Language of Anatomy • Anatomy is full of terms to describe regions of the body and where they are located in relationship to one another. • You will be responsible for learning many of the directional and regional terms, but not all.
Anatomical Position • When speaking about the body, we always assume that the body is in a standard position called the • Body is standing • Head and toes face forward • Feet slightly apart • Arms hanging at sides • Palms facing forward • Now, you try!
Body Planes • There are three major anatomical planes; transverse, coronal (or frontal), and midsagittal.
Directional Terms • Used to explain the location of a structure relative to the structures surrounding it.

Practice with Directional Terms • The wrist is _________________ to the hand. • The breastbone is ____________ to the spine. • The brain is ______________ to the spinal cord. • The thumb is ______________ to the fingers. (Be careful – remember the proper anatomical position.)
