  4. (Controlling Idea - Thesis) -establishes a focus for the essay, a position to be proven

  5. (Forecast) -indicates what is to follow

  6. (Opening Sentences: Example) People love to travel to visit friends and relatives; unfortunately, many people can no longer afford to do so.

  7. (Controlling Idea – Thesis: Example) Gas prices are too high for no real reason.

  8. (Forecast : Example) There are several solutions to this problem.
