The Posture Pedometer Cummerbund • Team Tito’s Burritos • Kelly Han • Kevin Vo • Kyle Mauer (Team Lead) • Dr. Aziz Inan ( Faculty Advisor) • SrijaPidaparthy (Industry Advisor) • Dr. Deborah Munro (Client) • Dr. Andrew Nuxoll (Instructor)
The Posture Pedometer Cummerbund • Average number of steps per day (spd) • “Good Health” = 10,000 spd • “Sedentary” < 5000 spd • Australia • 9,695 spd • Switzerland • 9,650 spd • Japan • 7,168 spd • America • 5,117 spd
Components Flex Sensor – Input for posture Tilt Switch – Input for pedometer Arduino – Processor Vibrating Motor – Output for posture LCD Readout – Output for pedometer
Components – Flex Sensor • Uni-directional Bend Sensor • Resistance decreases as device is bent • Often connected in series with a capacitor to influence timing • Available in multiple ohm ratings • No selection yet
Components – Tilt Switch • Mercury switch influenced by motion and gravity • Many practical applications • Roll sensing • Fall alarming • Fuzes
Components – Arduino • DIY Microcontroller • 14 digital I/O pins, 6 analog I/O pins, 16 MHz, 5 Volt operating voltage • USB, AC adaptor, or battery operated • “Shields” for easy compatibility • Easy to use software • Similar to Java
Components – Vibration Motor Found in all cell phones, game controllers, etc. 2 – 3.6V operating range Plan to integrate 2 – 4 of these for cummerbund
Components – LCD Readout Only Arduino shield we will use Keypad for manual reset 16x2 LCD white character, blue backlight Only uses 2 pins of the microcontroller
Piecing It Together • Five components all need to work independently of each other, yet all are integrated • Also integrated with the human body • Arduino is the right tool, yet we’ve never used a microcontroller • Solution • Start early • Stay ahead of schedule
Decisions and Risks • To MOSIS or not to MOSIS? • Microcontroller suited our needs best • Sacrificed experience for easy integration and customization • Did we take on too much? • Added functionality of the pedometer • Adds an additional interaction with the human body and additional components • Bigger budget • Broader audience outweighs extra potential for failure
Schedule • Documentation and Presentations • Design (Nov. 2) • Final Report (Mar. 22) • Founder’s Day (Apr. 9) • First integration of flex sensor and vibration motors (Nov. 14) • First integration of tilt switch and LCD readout (Nov. 30) • Spring – Assemble cummerbund, calibrate, test, tweak
Go Team Tito’s • The Posture Pedometer Cummerbund • 5 components • Arduino Microcontroller • Marketable • 100k entrepreneur challenge?
