  1. Becoming one with the SLO The Zen of Writing Academic Program SLOs

  2. Here’s the SLO Flow

  3. Academic Program SLOs • Identify what we want our students to be able to do at the end of a program of study. • Begin with the end in mind. • Are written for programs that result in a degree, transfer, certificate/licensure • Like Course SLOs, are aligned with one of our 4 Institutional SLOs and one Achievement Area

  4. SWC’s 4 Institutional SLOs All SLOs are based on one of our identified Institutional SLOs (ISLOs) 1. Communication 2. Thinking and Reasoning 3. Information Competency 4. Global Awareness

  5. How SLOs Are Communicated to Students • Course Description: overview of course • Course Objectives: content taught • SLOs: Core skills that students should be able to do after Course/Program • Measurement Tool: assesses level of understanding and/or attainment of outcome

  6. Program SLOs:(Keep it Simple) • Review our ISLOs and Achievement Areas • Which ISLO and Achievement area would you like more developed by your students during their program of study? • What do you want them to develop and improve on during their course of study in your program? • Pick the ISLO and Achievement Area

  7. Assessment of Program SLOs Measurement Tools • What, when, criteria for evaluation • Subjective/Objective • Test item (s) • Essay, project, presentation • Student’s self-evaluation • Your measurement here

  8. Sample Program SLO ISLO: Communication Skill 1. Listen and speak actively and critically to identify a person’s position and then analyze it to determine its quality. SLO: Student presents orally or in writing on a controversial course topic with support for position taken. Measure: 5 scale rubric with criteria for evaluation

  9. Sample Program SLO ISLO: Communication Skill 2. Students present their ideas in a clear and organized way to others. SLO: Student composes essay or oral presentation that supports and develops a thesis statement and cites references. Measure: Essay or oral presentation evaluated by criteria on a 5 scale rubric.

  10. Sample Program SLO ISLO: Thinking and Reasoning 4. Formulate and share ideas, analyze the ideas of others, integrate them into their thinking SLO: Students read current articles, analyze the ideas presented, and synthesize a written evaluation of each. Measure: 1 page written evaluation using criteria on 5 scale rubric.

  11. Sample Program SLO ISLO: Thinking and Reasoning 6. Use quantitative reasoning to identify, analyze and solve quantitative problems. SLO: Students apply critical thinking skills and the scientific method to evaluate issues relevant to our science program. Measure: 1 page written evaluation using criteria on 5 scale rubric.

SLO: Students research program topic by identifying, analyzing, and assessing ideas from a variety of sources and producing a research paper. 15. Use of Rubrics A rubric is a set of scoring guidelines for evaluating student work • Rubrics are used to communicate to the student the clear criteria on which their work will be evaluated • Rubrics assist in the development of metacognitive skills (learning how to learn and how to monitor own learning) so students can fully participate and are partners with us in their learning outcomes

  16. Ready, Set, Go You’re ready to write Program SLOs…
