CW preparing students for tough competitive college entrance requirements Colleges are now looking deep into transcripts and acknowledging rigorous coursework Focus on writing and critical thinking skills which are precursors to AP coursework and college classes
  29. Another Reason to go the HONORS route… CW has documented better work habits and ability to sustain rigor during high school when students start with English 9 Honors Freshman students taking English 9 Honors develop these important skills which transfer to other higher level subjects later on. AP is the “Varsity” team in academics – Our freshmen develop the foundational “freshman” and “JV” skills in Eng 9 Honors and Eng 10 Honors
  30. How do I get into English 9 Honors? Students scoring at Advanced in bothwriting and multiple choice on CST 7th Grade and who carry a GPA of 3.5 or higher, will automatically advance to English 9 Honors Students scoring at Proficient in writing or multiple choice or both on CST 7th Grade are highly recommended to take the English Placement Test for English 9 Honors Any Kastner student or new incoming student who wishes to try out for English 9 Honors can take the test if they want to pursue a competitive academic route at CWHS The Honors English 9 Placement Test is slated for Friday, April 11 in the Kastner MPR after-school.
  31. About the Test Test is only 1 hour and 15 minutes in length. Test will be administered at KIT on April 11 after-school. Make up date will occur on May 11 @ KIT after lunch and during school hours for those who missed the test. Test measures reading, vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and writing skills. Students notified about acceptance into program in late May.
  32. What is entailed? One short novel to read this summer – Of Mice and Men and a short selection of expository works. Students will be required to complete a self-exploratory writing assignment over the summer. Students will demonstrate they’ve read the summer material by completing HW/tests/quizzes upon their return to school in the fall. We strongly encourage high achieving English students to pursue a more challenging academic route to prepare for the more competitive college requirements.
