SLAVERY • By 1820: MISSOURI COMPROMISE • Divided new lands developed in the U.S. into “free” territories and “slave” territories • Caused much tension between South and North • DRED SCOTT DECISION (1857): (Supreme Court Case) • Courts ruled that slaves WERE property and the Congress could not prevent owners from taking their slaves anywhere they wished
