Now that we know the advantages and challenge’s the cloud computing brings with it, it’s a bit tricky for business analyst in doing business analysis and providing solution options to business functions so that the organization is in a win-win situation. Now coming to the meat of the discussion what should the BA’s do? BA’s do you know what cloud is? • How Cloud Works? • Understanding the technicality of how cloud works (not an expert level ) but what's feasible to achieve technically, features it provides and advantages of one platform over the other like Elastic computing Vs. Azure Vs. VMware etc. • Cloud Pricing Models • Understanding of pricing models for cloud service and deployment model is crucial to arrive at ROI for an enterprise ad BA’s should have a thorough knowledge of them. • Pricing model’s based on • No of login’s • No of virtual machines • Hourly rates • Bandwidth based etc. • Tools • What are the different tools for development, deployment, testing & monitoring of cloud based applications and cloud infrastructure. The emphasis here is to have a 360 degree view of cloud computing.. so that you can make better decisions and provide meaningful and cost effective solutions to your business

  12. What should the BA’s do - continued Is my enterprise cloud ready? Cloud adoption is no more a strategic move for an organization but is becoming an essential part of its existence. In such scenario it essential to have an understanding of where does the organization stand on its cloud adaptability and as a business analyst the below matrix is essential to have, to guide senior management on which applications needs to be moved to cloud and why and what is the impact. The following template helps understand the current enterprise state.

The biggest stumbling block an enterprise and a BA can face for the applications to be in cloud is your local inspector “Risk Office”, saying no way you are moving it out of the premise. Business analyst have to work extensively with the risk office to understand their need of risk compliance. Risk office has to extensively invest on upgrading their policies and procedure for cloud adoption and tools to help understand, alert and recover in case of breaches. Having the below matrix is essential and help in arriving at decision on which application fits the bill to be moved to cloud or which are a clear & strict no for cloud adoption.

What should the BA’s do - continued Make Or Buy Cloud based Application? • The make or buy decision of a cloud application will follow the traditional methods of analysis of • Meets the requirements • Cost of development, testing, deployment Vs. just buying & deploying. • ROI in both the cases • Part of organization strategic or operation need etc.. • But will now include the additional analysis of deployment on • Public, Private or Hybrid cloud? • Risk of hosting it on cloud. • Disaster recovery of the cloud vendor • Effect of pricing model for long term use. • While buying care needs to be taken to check • If a crowd sourced features application makes more sense or • Standard “WYSWYG”. • A crowd sourced features application gives the advantage of using industry standard application and each upgrade brings the organization closer to the industry standard practice, however the business loses on customization and might have to use features not required for.

What should the BA’s do - continued Enough of cloud, get my application back. • You done the drill of • Mapping applications features to requirements. • Application addresses the strategic and operational need. • Best deal from the market. • ROI is in place. • All set to roll out. • All this is okay unless as an analyst you include this important point. • What if you want to get the application back on premise. • The above point is good enough to rush the designers and architects to ensure that the journey back to on premise is smooth and forms a part of the contract with vendor. • The ROI calculation will now have to include this cost and effort into consideration. As James Bond says “No matter how good a spy you are always have a escape plan.
