  3. 2. MISSOURI COMPROMISE THE MISSOURI COMPROMISE ALLOWED MISSOURI TO ENTER THE UNION AS A SLAVE STATE WITH THE PROVISION THAT NO MORE SLAVE STATES COULD COME IN ABOVE THE 30* LATITUDE LINE. MISSOURI COMPROMISE CONFERENCE COMMITTEE PAPERS

ABOLITIONISTS: OPPONENTS OF SLAVERY THE ABOLITIONIST MOVEMENT TOOK SHAPE IN 1833, WHEN WILLIAM LLOYD GARRISON, ARTHUR AND LEWIS TAPPAN, AND OTHERS FORMED THE AMERICAN ANTI-SLAVERY SOCIETY IN PHILADELPHIA. THE GROUP ISSUED THIS MANIFESTO ANNOUNCING THE REASONS FOR FORMATION OF THE SOCIETY AND ENUMERATING ITS GOALS. ABOLITIONISTS BELIEVED THAT SLAVERY WAS A NATIONAL SIN, AND THAT IT WAS THE MORAL OBLIGATION OF EVERY AMERICAN TO HELP ERADICATE IT FROM THE AMERICAN LANDSCAPE BY FREEING ALL SLAVES.

ABOLITIONISTS FACED HOSTILITY AND VIOLENCE IN THE EARLY YEARS OF THE ANTI SLAVERY MOVEMENT IN THE EARLY 1830S AMOS DRESSER, A MINISTER IN MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, WAS ARRESTED AND PUBLICLY WHIPPED BY A COMMITTEE OF PROMINENT CITIZENS OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE FOR BEING A MEMBER OF AN OHIO ANTI-SLAVERY SOCIETY, POSSESSING AND DISSEMINATING ANTI-SLAVERY MATERIALS.

  6. 4. COMPROMISE OF 1850 THE U.S. GAINED NEW TERRITORY AFTER THE WAR WITH MEXICO WHICH REIGNITED THE BATTLE OVER THE NUMBER OF SLAVE AND FREE STATES. CALIFORNIA WAS ALLOWED TO ENTER INTO THE UNION AS A FREE STATE WHICH UPSET THE BALANCE OF FREE AND SLAVE STATES SINCE THERE HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN AN EQUAL NUMBER OF BOTH. IN EXCHANGE THE SOUTH GOT THE FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT WHICH REQUIRED RUNAWAY SLAVES TO BE RETURNED TO THEIR MASTERS IN THE SOUTH. CALHOUN WEBSTER CLAY SCOTT FILLMORE DRAWING OF THE MAJOR FIGURES INVOLVED WITH THE COMPROMISE OF 1850. THIS EVENT DEMONSTRATED HOW CLOSE THE UNION WAS TO SEPARATION.

  7. 5. KANSAS NEBRASKA ACT, 1854 THIS ACT OVERTURNED THE SLAVERY RESTRICTIONS OF THE MISSOURI COMPROMISE BY INTRODUCING THE CONCEPT OF POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY. THIS MEANT THAT TERRITORIES THAT WERE PREVIOUSLY RESTRICTED FROM SLAVERY COULD NOW VOTE ON WHETHER OR NOT TO BE A SLAVE STATE.

  8. 6. SCOTT v. SANFORD 1857 THIS SUPREME COURT DECISION STATED THAT BLACK PEOPLE, FREE OR SLAVE, COULD NOT BE CITIZENS OF THE U.S. THIS ANGERED ABOLITIONISTS, THOSE WORKING TO ABOLISH SLAVERY. DRED SCOTT, A SLAVE, HAD BEEN TAKEN BY HIS MASTER DR. EMERSON, AN ARMY SURGEON, TO A FREE STATE AND A FREE TERRITORY AND BACK TO MISSOURI, A SLAVE STATE. SCOTT AND HIS WIFE HARRIET SUED SANFORD, THE EXECUTOR OF EMERSON'S ESTATE, FOR THEIR FREEDOM ON THE BASIS OF THEIR RESIDENCE ON FREE SOIL. DRED SCOTT JUSTICE TANEY

  9. 7. JOHN BROWN’S RAID ON HARPERS FERRY JOHN BROWN ATTACKED THE FEDERAL ARSENAL AT HARPERS FERRY, VA WITH THE INTENT OF STARTING A SLAVE REVOLT. HE AND HIS FOLLOWERS WERE CAPTURED AND JOHN BROWN WAS HANGED. THIS ENFLAMED THE SOUTH AND WAS A DIRECT CAUSE OF THE CIVIL WAR. "If it is deemed necessary that I should forfeit my life for the furtherance of the ends of justice, and mingle my blood further with the blood of my children, and with the blood of millions in this slave country whose rights are disregarded by wicked, cruel, and most unjust enactments, I submit: so let it be done!" (Last speech to the court at his trial, November 2, 1859)

  10. 8. ELECTION OF 1860 THE ELECTION OF REPUBLICAN LINCOLN, WHO RAN ON THE PROMISE OF NO MORE SLAVE STATES, PROMPTED SOUTHERNERS TO SECEDE FROM THE UNION AND FORM THEIR OWN NATION, THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA.
