Task 1 • Report on ground measurement needs of TAIWIS and opportunities for collaboration with FTSN (NSOC) • Delivered in September
Task 1 • Standard meteorological measurements (ie temperature, pressure, wind speed, etc.) • Accurate automated determination of precipitation type • LWE
Task 2 • Report on Terminal Area Icing Spatial Variability Literature Search • Delivered in September
Task 2 • Need to baseline the uncertainty in any one gauge – individual is best, but also for type, snow shield, etc. Best way to do that is with paired gauges during your experiment. • Tipping bucket gauges come with their own set of uncertainties that probably make them a poor choice for the snow rate variability experiment:
Task 2 • Appropriate corrections factors should be applied to precipitation gauges used for snowfall measurements to account for losses in sampling due to winds, wetting, and other factors. However, the effect on the immediate snowfall rate has not been evaluated, especially in light of assessing local variability from identical gauge/shield instruments.
Task 3 • Test Plans for Field Studies of Icing Spatial Variability at DIA and ACY • Expected to be completed by the end of December
Task 4 • Studies of Icing Spatial Variability at DIA and ACY • Progress report due Dec 31
Task 4 • Current status • Applying 3 additional surface sites at DIA to collect 1-minute observations of LWE, temperature and precipitation type • Inter-gauge comparison • Collecting radar reflectivity data for events over DIA for comparison to snow gauge data
Task 5 • Freezing Rain Sensor Sensitivity Study; Progress report through Dec 31, 2013; Final report, March 30, 2014, will be covered in subsequent Technical Direction • Progress report due Dec 31
Task 5 • Current efforts: • Analysis of FZRA sensor data during FZRA and FZDZ periods as determined from METAR reports
Task 6 • Draft plan for integrated TAIWIS platform; Outline due Dec 31, 2013 • Progress report due Dec 31
