AIMS OF BOGONG IMG PROGRAM • Recruitment and support of IMGs who are vocationally registered General Practitioners • Enabling hospital and community based IMGs to identify and realise their career paths • Increased retention of safe and effective IMG practitioners in the Hume region
RATIONALE FOR DEDICATED IMG PROGRAM • Training for IMGs under workforce restrictions to successfully complete RACGP exams • Foster self- directed learning and group learning among IMGs • Allow IMGs to comply with RWAV course requirements locally • Assist IMGs (both registrars and non-registrars) in Communication and ESL strategies
METHODSExam practice • Practice RACGP OSCE exams • Feedback sessions to IMGs re results in Study Groups- Wangaratta, Shepparton, Yarrawonga/Cobram, Albury/Wodonga • Themed workshops within region focussing on communication skills- EM, WH, Indigenous, Medico-legal, Drug and Alcohol, Mental Health
METHODSSelf-directed learning • G-prime access with educational material • Study Group concept - “BLT like” sessions • Offer limited educational resources- books, DVDs
METHODSESL support • ESL/ CST Teachers offer individual F2F tuition with engaged IMGs • GECCO or other assessment tools help to define learning needs • Study Group ME’s have mentoring role • ESL/CST teachers require educational support

RESULTS :Retaining the “Rovers” • RACGP exam successes- 23 IMGs fellowed from 2007-2011 • Retention of IMG ROVERs exceeds IMG registrars- 70 % of FRACGP fellows remain in rural practice, 57% remain in Bogong after 4.5 yrs vs 23% IMG registrars in rural practice after 6 yrs • Bogong is an attractive area for recruitment of doctors – relative proximity to Melb, good exam support, multi-cultural communities - Research by Dr Marian Robinson (July 2011)- presented GPET 2011
