The Competition • The Ocean Rowing Society discourages Colin and Julie • Throws support behind ErdenEruc and Tim Harvey
Frightened by a Freighter • Colin and Julie about to be hit by a freighter • The ship, named Norca, was 180 metres long • Ship passed within 30 centimetres of their boat
Hurricane Vince • On Julie’s birthday, the two found out about a hurricane, formed near Madeira, which was moving toward them • Hurricane about 600 nautical miles away
Hurricane Vince, cont’d... • Colin and Julie contacted Dean Fenwick, who told them that the hurricane was moving east-northeast • Hurricane had formed in waters cooler than 24 Celsius
An Update... The National Hurricane Center in Miami informed Julie and Colin that nothing had changed with the hurricane, except that it was much closer Hurricane classified as a full-fledged hurricane, and was heading straight for the Ondine (now only 300 nautical miles away)
An Anxiety-filled Night • Calculated the storm would pass closest to them by about 11 p.m. • Ondinetilted 90 degrees • By 11 p.m., Colin and Julie were covered in bruises • By 3 a.m., the worst was over
The Canary Islands: Finally Some Land in Sight! • Canaries are a chain of volcanic islands • About 60 kilometres off the coast of Africa, extending 500 kilometres • Subtropical latitude of about 28 degrees
A Dorado = Delicious Dinner • As Colin and Julie approached the Canary Islands, they caught a dorado • The dorado landed on their dinner plates that night, along with vegetables and mashed potatoes

Tim and Erden: Technical Difficulties • Tim and Erden were unsuccessful in getting their boat placed in a freighter • Winds finally switched, and Tim and Erden were able to leave from Cascais, a port along the Lisbon Coast
Alone at Sea, yet again... Ten days after leaving the Canaries, Colin and Julie had only seen one freighter.
