  1. Northern California Earthquake By, Hunter Turner

  2. How Was The Earthquake Formed • An earthquake is what happens when two blocks of the earth suddenly slip past one another. The surface where they slip is called the fault or fault plane. The location below the earth’s surface where the earthquake starts is called the hypocenter, and the location directly above it on the surface of the earth is called the epicenter.

  3. Date And Location • April 18, 1906 San Francisco was wrecked by a Great Earthquake. The earthquake shock was felt from Coos Bay, Oregon, to Los Angeles, and as far east as central Nevada, an area of about 375,000 square miles, approximately half of which was in the Pacific Ocean, at 5:13 a.m.

  4. Landscape Effect • Wood buildings lost = 24,671 • Brick buildings lost = 3,168 • Total buildings lost = 28,188 • The landscape cost was more than more than $400 million.

  5. Human Effect The official casualty count was 700, but as many as 3000 people might have died. An estimated 225,000 people were left homeless, out of a population of about 400,000. Most of the fatalities occurred in San Francisco, and 189 were reported elsewhere.

  6. Interesting Facts • It is thought that more damage was done by the resulting fire after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake than by the earthquake itself. In 2002, the number of farms in San Francisco was 8, the remaining farms out of 304. fires destroyed about 28,000 buildings and 500 blocks – ¼ of San Francisco. • in the first 19 months, San Francisco spent $90 million on reconstruction. • fires burned for three days and three nights; some were as hot as 2,700°F. The fires were more catastrophic than the earthquake itself.
