Population Growth andClimate Change • Environmental problems are aggravated by population size: current 6.8 billion are already a climate threat. • The impact of probable growth to 9 billion will depend in large part on what those people consume. • Poor countries have high fertility but lower impact on global emissions. • Rich countries have low fertility but their high consumption causes global environmental damage • ‘Development’ and growing consumption in large, middle-income countries will have the most impact on climate change.
