Understanding the Military Context “Citizens Serving Communities”
Demographics • 2,246,000 Americans in Uniform • 1.4 Million are Active Duty • 860,000 are Reserve & National Guard • 30% represent an ethnic minority • 16% are female • 52% are married • 40% are under age 30 • 7% single parent families • 250,000 are preparing to deploy or are deployed • 3 out of 5 of these have family responsibilities
Scope of Need • To date, more than 1.5 million Americans have been deployed • 500,000 have been deployed for at least 2 tours in CZ • 70,000 have been deployed for 3 tours in CZ • 20,000 have been deployed at least 5 times • To date, over 3,200 Americans have been KIA • Over 23,000 have returned from CZ with permanent disabilities • 25% of all returning service members are struggling with psychological injuries • Currently 700,000 children in America have one parent deployed
Distance to Drilling Unit • DOD defines reasonable commuting distance as 50 miles • 2004 GAO reports revealed 400 mile average commute • Result is benefits data is not getting "home"
