ministering to youth in transition
transitioning -the reality • stats suggest a retention rate of 25%, 5 yrs after high school.
transitioning -causes • off our radar at 18 • little transition prep • many of your YM’s encourage a consumer mentality • very little for young adults
What can we learn • It’s a church issue. • Retention & integration • 2. Christian Ed Matters Greatly • Teachings on church • Can I doubt, differ, disagree • 3. Many YM’s are creating consumers not disciples
What can we learn • 4. 25 is the new benchmark of YM success • Adolescence lengthened, YM’s must too. • Are our teens in church at 25 • 5. Churches need to become familiar with the YA culture
What can we learn • 6. Churches should prepare HS grads for the transition • Covenant/transitioning mentor • 7. Regions must cooperate • Who is coming to us? Where are my youth going?
Convention’s response • 1)Raising the issue • 2)Young Adult Worship Festival – August 19-20, Moncton, NB • 3)Facilitate Regional Partnerships • 4)Create Covenant Material • 5)YM Training at Acadia & leadership events • 6)Young Adult Mission Trip • May 12-26, 2005 • Prague, Czech Republic
