Flight Control SystemsThe “Beaver” Autopilot Brian Jewell Engr. 315 Professor Ribeiro
Overview • Introduction and brief history • Functions • Guidance • Control • Longitudinal • Lattitudinal • MATLAB Example the “Beaver” system
Introduction and Brief History • Pre 1947: First Autopilots controlled flight path and gave level flight. System comprised of spinning weightsthat maintain a specific orientation • 1947: The U.S. Air Force successfully tested the first fully functioning autopilot system. The system controlled takeoff, landing, and flight path. • These early systems were prone to error and required a full staff to work them • Now: “Fly by wire” systems are the most common. Computers do most the flying.
Functions • Guidance • Measures the condition of the aircraft • Outer Loop • Does not actually guide the aircraft • Feeds the values into the control loop
Functions • Control • Does the actual work • Receives values from guidance and controls the aircraft. • Two major controllers: • Longitudinal • Latitudinal
