Correctional Institution • Places of confinement to reform offenders into law-abiding people who worked
1971-present • The rehab piece of it is vanishing • It’s about retribution, incapacitation, and deterrence
Security Levels • Super Max • Maximum • Medium • Minimum
Super Max • The “worst of the worst” • Those who pose a threat to national security • Have individual cells • Are in lock down 23 hours a day • One hour exercise by themselves • Meals served through cell door • Every move is monitored by surveilance
Maximum • Need to provide maximum internal and external supervision of inmates • High security perimeters, many check points inside • Inmates present serious escape risks or pose serious threats to themselves or others • Supervision is direct and constant
Medium • Inmates present a moderate escape risk or may pose a threat to other inmates. • Supervision is still constant and direct but more work and program opportunities available
Minimum • The goal is to return the inmate to a greater sense of responsibility and independence • Inmates not considered a serious risk to others. • Program participation typically mandated and geared to reintegrating them into society. • Access to the community is limited and under the supervision of staff members
