“Math Wars” • Constructivist Approach • Group work, hands-on, student centered • Directed teaching • Drill and practice, teacher directed • Research suggest that students learn math with a more Constructivist approach. • Technologies for both learning approaches
Concrete vs. Virtual Manipulatives • Concrete • Blocks • Spinners • Cuisenaire rods • Helps students to grasp math concepts by manipulating objects. • Virtual Manipulatives • Replicas of real manipulatives • Can be found on the internet • Research shows that students’ attitudes are higher due to using VM. • Offer more flexibility than real objects.
Calculators and Software • 4 reasons to use graphing calculators: Collect raw data, Examine multiple cases, Immediate feedback, Display graphs. • Interactive Geometry Software- create and manipulate geometric construction. • 3-D Shapes • CAS (computer algebra systems)- can carry out complex calculations
Computer-Based Learning • Problem Solving • True value of math is understood when students can apply knowledge to solve problems • CBL (Calculator-based Labs)- link calculators or computers to data-gathering instruments to allow students to gather and analyze data. • Data Curricula • Spreadsheets are tools that students can manipulate numbers in cells to see “what if” and “how”. • Students can also learn stats using spreadsheet software.
Computer-Based Learning Continued • Supporting Communications • Students must be able to convert mathematical thinking in to words. • Using technology in small groups promote social interaction while using technology in math class. • Basic Skill Building • Although the push for higher-level thinking is popular, students must practice basic skills to build to more advanced thinking • EX: FASTTMATH
Issues and Problems in Science Instruction • NSES- council that makes decisions and guidelines for science education • Promote active learning, inquiry, and cooperative learning • Inquiry-Based Instruction- letting students experience the subject they are learning • EX: experiments students can participate in
Continued Problems • K-8 Difficulties • Science education is rapidly changing and students in elementary school struggle with these concepts because they are not as prepared as in math and reading. • Teachers can do PD classes to understand new ways to communicate new ideas. • Virtual Science Labs • Teachers want to have “hands-on/minds-on” learning by having students to experiments, but the push for technology encourages virtual labs that are less messy and are easily manipulated.
Technology Integration • GLOBE Program- a real scientific investigation done entirely on the internet. • Record data, analyze the data, and can be displayed in a graph • Data loggers- device that records data over time with sensors (example: GPS). • Science Games • Motivation • Use cell phones as clickers
Robotics • Increasingly popular with problem solving and getting students interested in engineering • Great effect on attitude in the classroom • Robotics camps and competitions are offered at every grade level
