What is MAP-Works? Making Achievement Possible (MAP-Works) enables effective early intervention with at-risk students, motivates, informs, and coordinates faculty/staff to intervene effectively and focuses students on college success behaviors. MAP-Works assigns a color to students participants based on a risk factor logarithm developed over 20 years at Ball State University AND utilizing enrollment and early warning data uploaded by UWM. First Year Center mentors and Resident Assistants follow up with students at-risk to refer them to resources and connect them to other students, programs and events. Advisors, faculty, staff, and housing professionals review the information and refer students directly to resources such as Financial Aid, the Career Development Center, Norris Health Center, Panther Academic Support and the Dean of Students Office.

Lessons from 2010-11 • UWM’s academic focus: academic self-efficacy and advanced academic behaviors. • UWM’s social focus: peer connections. • The major concerns of our least satisfied respondents were: financial issues, wanting to transfer to a two year institution, or UWM was lower than their third choice. Some planned on dropping out, were not communicating with a parent or guardian, believed they’d get below a C average, or wanted a different social environment because they didn’t feel like they fit in.

Academic Major and Career Decisions • 76.4% (2239) students have decided a major • 70.4% (1577) of those have declared a major • 31.2% (893) students are stressed about selecting a major • Students who may not get accepted into their major would do the following: • 526 would reapply for next semester • 393 said they don’t know what they’d do • 208 would transfer • 111 would change majors but stay at UWM • 52% (1459) have selected a career path • 89.5% have not interacted with Career Development Center
Transferring Somewhere Else? • 71.2% (1998) intend to return to UWM next year vs. 9.7% (272) who do not intend to return • 1724 have a high commitment to returning to UWM • 191 intend to transfer to another institution • 25 plan to take some time off • 2% (60) respondents said that they had plans to transfer out of UW-Milwaukee before attending
