Lesson recapped in day to two A concise summary of day one discussion by Tigist and Dr. Berhanu Workshop participant was divided into four groups by region and discuss on Gender data collection and analysis tools and questionnaire Provided their feed backs to further refine the tool
Lesson recapped in day to two The following general and specific comments have been raised by the each of the four groups. General comments • Lack of specificity, some words are vague, not clear • The tool has repetitions • It misses important components like capacity building, knowledge management, possible solutions for the constraints, post-harvest handling, processing • It needs further discussion with regional representatives and refinements
Specific comments • Specific comments • On 1st page, we need one additional column for the mixed (male and female) group interview • On page 1 we need to have member participant from different age groups, and wealth status. • On page three, the section heading does not describe the table contents… the heading should read community characteristics • Use appropriate wording technical terms for respective commodities. (page 4 varieties should be replaced by breeds in livestock commodities)
Specific comments (cont’d) • The word impact is not clear • The tool ask about decision making but the term should be specific.. Like decision to do what marketing, production, input utilizations • Irrigated crop section questions should be asked for generic groups like fruits and vegetables or for specific prioritized crop types
Consensus on the Gender analysis tool • It will be refined together with all LIVES project team within the next 15-30 days • The current tool is generic and but contextualization is needed by taking into account the situation on the ground which is the responsibility of regional and zonal LIVES project teams

Introduction of E-Reader • Objective To improve the reading habits of experts at grass root levels • Progress • Provided training and distributed e-readers to east and west shewa zones • Challenges • Wrong expectation of the technology (confused with the ipad, tablate..) • Modality of maintenance is not adequately addressed • Lack proper criteria to select benefactors experts • Not well thought distribution modalities (other alternative have not been considered)
Group work on SWOT analysis of Gender mainstreaming in Agriculture • Strengthen • Committed staffs • All LIVES staffs took sanitization training • Existence of gender mainstreaming expert in the project • Strong linkage with other international organizations in the area of gender issues • Weakness/Limitation • Limited experience in gender mainstreaming as an organization at regional and zonal project office • Limited resources compare to expectations of partners • Lack of adequate communication facilities at regional and zonal project offices
SWOT (Cont’d) • Opportunity • Enabling environment as shown by development policies, plans and directives (GTP….) • Existence of women empowering institutions at all administrative levels • Existence of gender focal persons in government organizations • Existence of other development partners in the areas of gender mainstreaming like NGOs… • Expansion of education opportunity for women

Concluding remark on SWOT • Confusion of participants in identifying the difference between strength and opportunity as well as limitations and threat.
Facilitation skills on gender empowerment tools • Animal characterization • Birds, dogs, porcupine, wolfs, tiger and cow behaviors have been described by the participants. • The main idea is animals have different characters similar human begins can exhibit a number of behaviors. Thus during group discussion we have to pay attention to those characters.

Facilitation skills on gender empowerment tools • Key informant interview • Select key informant with special experience, expertise • Out sider could provide valuable information • We have to cross check or validate the opinion or information • Focus Group discussion • To gather detailed information on very specific issues • Participants are usually 6-12 • Care should be taken to select participant that have intimate knowledge the issue at hand • Facilitators and rapporter are needed to carry out the discussion
