Weatherization Standards Nationally –recognized certifications and standards
Weatherization Standards • RESNET • Building Performance Institute • Home Performance by Energy Star • NABCEP
Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) • Nationally recognized • Used as a building block in many WAP • Established the HERS Index • RESNET standards encompass three areas: • Software accreditation achieved by passing a battery of software verification tests developed by U.S. National Laboratories and RESNET • RESNET National Rater Test for knowledge base and skill - $50 • An annual quality assurance evaluation
Building Performance Institute • National non-profit that credentials individuals and organizations • Nationally recognized certifications • BPI certification is required for Home Performance by ENERGY STAR • Corporate costs: $1,500 initial fee • Individual - $550 ($200 written; $350 field)
Home Performance by ENERGY STAR • Nationally recognized • Used in 22 states (including Maryland) • Adapt the standards to local requirements • Fees for training and participation are set by individual jurisdictions
NABCEP • Nationally recognized • Three certificate levels • Entry Level Certificate • PV Installer • Solar Thermal Installer
Residential & Commercial Weatherization Residential Commercial • Lead abatement • OSHA training • General residential maintenance skills • OSHA training – advanced • General building maintenance • Commercial skills (scaffolding, etc.)
Weatherization Training • Emphasizes general construction skills • Timeframes for technical classroom training • intermediate weatherization installer training (5 days) • construction related software training (5-8 days) • basic building systems training (5-8 days) • advanced weatherization installer training (4-6 days) • basic energy auditor training (5 days) • Additional time for on-the-job training • Additional time for literacy and numeracy training
Home Energy Auditor • HSD/GED • Use specialized equipment • Customer service skills • RESNET Certification
Weatherization Technician • HSD/GED • Construction knowledge • Good weatherization is good home maintenance – the same skills are in play • Building analyst certification from BPI
Weatherization Inspector • HSD/GED • Knowledge of weatherization standards • Construction experience • Customer service skills • Knowledge of local codes • Certification as BPI Specialist
Commonalities • Require High School Diploma or GED • Some construction experience • Criminal background check • Drug and alcohol testing • Valid driver’s license
