What is the Lymphatic System? • Network • Open circuit through the body • Carries lymph • Function: • Defend • Absorbs fat • Transports lymph
Fluid Information • Three types of fluid • Plasma • Tissue fluid • Lymph • White blood cells and lymphocytes • contains proteins and fats • lies in the interstitial spaces of the blood • Protection from foreign particles
Lymphatic Capillaries • Closed- ended tubes extended into interstitial spaces • Receives tissue fluid • Located in the lining of the small intestine
Lymphatic Vessels • Prevents backflow of lymph • Contains three tunics: • tunica interna • tunica media • tunica externa • Carries lymph • Transports fluid away from interstitial spaces in tissues and return it to bloodstream
Lymphatic Ducts and Trunks • Drains lymph from lymphatic vessels • Different types of trunks: • Lumbar Trunk • Intercostals/ Bronchomediastinal Trunk • Intestinal Trunk • Subclavian Trunk • Jugular Trunk • Different Types of Ducts : • Thoracic Duct • Right Lymphatic Duct
Lymph Nodes • Contains blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels • Filters harmful particles • Contains macrophages • Located in • cervical region • Auxiliary region • supratrochlear region • Abdominal cavity • Pelvic cavity • Thoracic cavity
Thymus • Thymus • Made of lymphatic tissue • Adipose and connective tissue replace normal LT • Connective tissue extend inward and subdivide into lobules • T-lymphocytes are matured and leave thymus • Secrete protein hormones
Spleen • Made of connective tissue • Filters • Resembles large lymph node • Fixes damaged blood cells • Contains hilum • Subdivides into lobules
Immune System • Two types: • Innate Defensive (Non-Specific • Adaptive Defensive (Specific)
Innate Defense (Non-Specific) • First line of defense against pathogens • Species Resistance • Mechanical Barriers • Chemical Barriers • Natural Killer Cells • Phagocytes • Inflammation/Fever
Adaptive Defense (Specific) • • Immune response with ability to distinguish molecules that are part of the part and those that is not • Second and third line of defense against pathogens • Antigens -B Cell -T Cell
Cardiovascular System Vs. Lymphatic System • Team Effort • Blood • Transportation • Conductive Mediums • Leukocytes vs. Lymphocytes
