BACKGROUND • 60’s and 70’s Comprehension Approach Listening comprehension • James Asher • The time people spend learning a second language. • The stress that is found in Ss of language learning. TPR Total Physical Response Stress-free Approach First Understanding then Production. Learn like a Baby
GOALS • The main goal of this method is that Ss learn a second language using some of the same ways that they use to learn the first language. • Ss should understand what they are learning through listening and language contact until they are ready to speak and make production. • All of this is focus on reduce the stress of the Ss in class, building confidence between them.
TPR CLASS • Classes are active • Classes are emphasized on listening comprehension. • The environment is very free of stress. • Grammar and syntax are not thought directly, they will be internalized by the Ss through synthesis not analysis.

Techniques. • Using Commands to direct behaviour. “ The commands are given to get students to perform an action” Teacher: Ingrid, walk to the whiteboard. (Ingrid goes to the blackboard)
Role reversal. “Students command their teacher and classmates to perform some actions”. Teacher Students Student Student Student Teacher.
Action Sequence. “A long series of coneccted commands can be given to get a whole procedure” Take out your pen Take out a piece of paper Write a letter. Fold the letter. Put it in an envelope.

Conclusion • TPR is a method developed by DR. James J. Asher • It is based on commands • Role: “Parent and Child” • Emphasize: Vocabulary and Grammar • The activity is a “Game” • It is most used in beginners than advanced learners
