Mixtures • Heterogeneous Mixtures—composed of different types of phases of substances - ex: Fruit salad Granite • Homogeneous Mixtures—the same throughout (substances have dissolved in one another) - ex: Salt water Alloys (metal mixtures)
Heterogeneous Mixtures • Suspensions • Particles appear to be more or less evenly distributed, but particles will separate out when the suspension sits • Particles can then be filtered out • Ex: Orange juice!
Heterogeneous Mixtures • Colloids • Particles are smaller than particles in a suspension • When you shine a light through them, they scatter light! –Tyndall Effect • (So the mixture is not the same throughout) • Ex: Jello, Egg Whites, Blood Plasma, Whipped Cream (Dispersing gas in a liquid), Marshmellows (Gas in a solid)
Emulsion—a special kind of colloid • Emulsion: A mixture of two or more immiscible liquids in which one liquid is dispersed in the other • (Immiscible—liquids that usually do not mix!) • Ex: Cream (made of oily fat in water, with proteins) • Emulsifier—protein that keeps the lipids (fats) dispersed in each other
Homogeneous Mixtures • Solutions—homogeneous mixture of two or more substances that are uniformly dispersed throughout a single phase • One substance dissolves into the other • Solute—substance that is dissolved • Solvent—substance that solute is dissolved into
Many States of Solutions • Solid-liquid solution • Sugar in water • Liquid-liquid solution • Gasoline • Alloy a solid or liquid mixture of two or more metals • Solid-solid Bronze (tin + copper)
