  4. How does crime affect everyone and not just the victim and perpetrator? • All people have to pay taxes to help support and create programs aimed at dealing with crime. • .’

What are 12 factors that people often blame for crime occurring? • Poverty, permissive courts, unemployment, lack of education, abuse of alcohol and drugs, inadequate police protection, rising population, lack of parental guidance, breakdown of society morals, ineffective correctional system, a little chance of being caught and influence of television, movies and music.

  6. Define the term ‘gang.’ • People who form groups closed to the general public with the purpose of committing illegal and violent activity.

  7. What four things are today’s gangs focused on? • Drug trafficking, firearms sales, auto theft, and prostitution.

  8. What are three specific things that new initiates may be asked to do in order to join a gang? • Complete a robbery, or drug deal, or to commit some act of violence.

  9. Name seven factors that put young people at risk of joining a gang. • Poverty • School failure • Substance abuse • Family dysfunction • Domestic and community violence. • Poor self-esteem • Little adult interaction in their lives.
