  1. SedentaryWhat’s this about? Active Fife: Physical Activity Team

  2. What is sedentary behaviour? • Any waking behaviour where sitting or lying is the dominant mode of posture. • Energy expenditure is very low. • Screen time (TV viewing, computer use), motorised transport, sitting at work, sitting to read, talk, eat, or listen to music. Basically - ALL the time that an individual is not standing or sleeping!

  3. A Typical Day?

  4. Why is this an issue? • Humans are designed to move • Sitting for long periods slows down metabolism leading to... • weight gain, • inflammation… which leads to back and neck problems • reduction in circulation… which leads to lack of focus and productivity • A sedentary life is also associated with a higher incidenceof diabetes, heart disease and cancer!!!! • And… this is largely independent of the physical activity you do

  5. So does it really make a difference? • Just standing up every 20 mins reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer and reduces back discomfortby 32%. • After alternating standing/sitting, people say they are 71% more focused, 66% more productive, 33% less stressed. • Reduced back and neck pain • Fewer health issues • More focused • Increase productivity • Fewer mental health problems

  6. So What can you do about it? Start meetings with a 10 minute standing catch up Stand up to take phone call Set your phone or other device to stand up and shake out Standing coffee areas Share the chairs’ meetings: one chair between two people Rearrange your office so you have to get up out of your chair to use the printer, bin, phone etc. Walk to a colleague’s desk instead of phoning them Leave your desk at lunchtime Walk up 1 flight of stairs Stand at the back of the room for Presentations Make your own cuppa Consider a standing desk   Mini Activity Breaks
