Europe) • Attacks by invaders led to numerous changes: • Lack of trade • Cities began to collapse • People moved from cities to country • Decline of learning • Loss of common language

Frankish Empire • Created by Germanic tribe in 5th century • CLOVIS • Head of dynasty (Merovingian) • Converted to Christianity (After major victory) • 1st important German king to be Catholic • 511 AD died land divided among 4 sons: • Sons extended empire, but ineffective leaders • Nicknamed “Do-Nothing Kings” • “Mayor of Palace” became most important position

CAROLINGIAN FAMILY • PEPIN • Leader of all Frankish lands • CHARLES MARTEL • Son to Pepin and Won at Battle of Tours • PEPIN THE SHORT • Son of Charles asked Pope for power to rule over Franks—Pope agreed—In return Pepin wins back Pope’s land • CHARLEMAGNE • Spread Christianity and reunited Europe-1st time since Rome • Stopped mob from attacking Rome—Pope awards him with title of Roman Emperor • THINK OF IMPORTANCE OF ROME • HONORS: YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE A FAMILY TREE
