The ECO-map: A Family Assessment Tool Name, Date, Location
What is an ECO-map? Very simply, an ECO-map is a graphic representation of a family’s social system. It includes: • Informal supports (e.g. friends, extended family members) and • Formal supports (e.g. ECSE providers, services coordinators, physicians) supports.
Why use the ECO-map? The ECO-map has shown itself to be extraordinarily useful as a technique to meet the family needs assessment component of the Part C IDEA requirement (“the specific resources and needs of each family must be considered in the development and implementation of the IFSP”).
How is the ECO-map used in early intervention? Enhance services by focusing on the family’s perceptions of their links and relationships with: • friends, • coworkers, • agencies, • groups, • health care, etc.
When is the ECO-map used? At the beginning as part of assessment, or, the information can be gathered over time, as supports and resources come up in conversations.
ECO-map Process • Introduce as a way of identifying family members, friends and other supports. • Use informal conversation. • Paper and pencil. • Take 10-15 minutes.
How does the ECO-map look? • Put a square in the middle of the page wth the child and immediate family names inside. • Next, identify extended family and other informal supports and put in boxes along the top of the page. • Finally, identify formal supports and put in boxes along the bottom.
How does the ECO-map look? Draw lines between the family and the supports to demonstrate the type of relationship that exists. • A solid line = a strong relationship; • A dotted line indicates a stressful relationship; • A thin line means the relationship is “fine”.
Finally, the eco-map has been found to be particularly useful with families of culturally diverse backgrounds. Each family’s cultural heritage and values become more transparent as the family and professional work together to identify the family’s links.
In summary, the eco-map has 4 advantages: • It is simple to use and understand • It is adaptable to any size family, any culture, and can be used with children as well as adults • It is functional and useful; and • It allows for the creativity of the family and the practitioner.
