Gentile’s “received the word of God” for • Repentance • Forgiveness & • Salvation in Jesus’ name • Gentile Christians accepted without becoming Jews (circumcision is sign of Old Covenant) • Circumcised Believers Awaited Peter with • Judgment & Criticism for defiling himself with Gentiles • Used Derogatory slang Greek word akrobustian meaning “foreskinned” people • Feared period of “peace” would end • Peter Explained what had happened (TXT) • “six brothers” were Witnesses to Events • Angel told Cornelius Peter would bring a “salvation” message to him & his household • Holy Spirit “came on them” (as Pentecost) as he spoke Peter Explains
Holy Spirit given to Gentiles also • Peter Reminds them of the Lord’s words concerning the Baptism “with the Holy Spirit” (Matt 3:11, etc.) • God has given the Gentiles “the same gift” as He gave the Jews – Gk means “identical” or “equal”. Significant since the “wind & fire” is not seen as evidence but “speak with tongues” (see Acts 10:45, 46) • Peter & Witnesses (six brothers) are Convinced of Evidence “spoke with other tongues” as Spirit moved • Peter is no longer Perplexed (see Acts 10:17) but convinced & (Acts 11:17) would Receive Gentiles Believers & not “withstand (oppose) God”. • Jewish Jerusalem Believers Agreed - by the Holy Spirit “they had not other objections” for “God has granted to the Gentiles repentance unto life” Peter Explains
Little Excitement over Gentile Converts in Caesarea among Jerusalem Christians • Peter considered his Ministry Primarily to Jews (see Gal 2:7-9) • Luke focuses on Antioch an ethnically mixed congregation, trade center in Asia Minor (Turkey today) capital of Roman Province of Syria, 300+ miles north of Jerusalem on the Orontes River, with population of ½ million people(see maps). • Evangelism in all directions but Luke focuses on Ministry of Paul (& others) through Antioch (Center for Gentile Missions) – focus of major portion of the rest of Book of Acts. • Ministry outside Jerusalem was primarily to Greek-Speaking Jews in Phoenicia, Cyprus, Cyrene, Antioch, and throughout Asian Minor (see maps). Gentiles Believe
Jerusalem Church sent Barnabas to Antioch to encourage believers & preach the Gospel of Jesus. • Saw Evidence of God’s Grace among gentile Believers • Purpose in their Heart to remain True/Loyal “to the Lord” • Barnabas had a powerful Reputation as a “good man”, “full of the Holy spirit and of faith” • “great many people added to the Lord (Jesus)” • Acknowledging need for help, Barnabas goes to Tarsus (Paul’s hometown-100 miles up coast), seeking Paul • He knew it was God’s time for Paul’s Gentile Ministry • Barnabas & Paul became chief teachers at Antioch Church for1 year, teaching a “great many people” • Believers (also saints) are first called Christians in Antioch – Christiani for soldiers (Latin iani) of Christ • As soldiers in Roman army took their General’s name, e.g. Caesars’s army were Caesariani • Name used here & in Acts26:28 & 1 Peter 4:16 • Preferred names: disciples, brothers, saints, those of the way or servants (slaves) of Jesus Barnabs to Antioch
