Finding Information on a Topic Using Global Issues in Context
Start by either typing your keywords into the “Basic Search” or by clicking on “Browse Issues and Topics.”
When browsing, you’ll get a list of topics that already have “portals” in the database. They are listed in alphabetical order, and are flagged if they are new additions to the database, or have been recently updated.
In this example, we’ll use the topics list to select the portal for Global Warming…
Once in the “Portal” you’ll see a topic overview, along with links to various forms of media, articles, reference works, and other information.
The portals also have tools that allow you to bookmark or share information.
Once you click on an article and get to its full text, you will find more tools and options. You can click “Listen” if you’d like the text read to you, or you can download, print, email, share, etc.
Among the sources available from each portal are the “Global Viewpoints.” This section contains things like editorials and op-ed pieces on the topic. In this example, you’ll see over 1100 articles!
If you need book sources, look under the section labeled “Reference.” All of the articles here are reproduced from reference books.
Charts, tables and graphs – some interactive – can be found under the “Statistics” section. And, of course, “News” contains articles from newspapers and wire services. There are also sections for magazine articles, and material from academic journals.
These boxes have links to multi-media, such as podcasts, and to primary source material.
Clicking on an article title will bring up the full-text, along with all the tools and features.
