We will talk briefly about the VERY ending -- pages 228-233 • What shift occurs at the end of the novel? • Why do you think Ninh ends the book this way? What do you think has happened to Kien? • Did you like the ending? Why or why not? • The speaker states “this work would still be a work created by turbulent, even manic inspiration” (229). What are the benefits of this “manic inspiration”? How is this style befitting a war novel? • The speaker also states “this style proved the writer’s inherent weakness” (230). Do you agree or disagree? What is his (the writer’s) “inherent weakness” anyway?
Ahhhhh!!!! More literary analysis… CHARACTERIZATION & ART
Characterization How the author “paints” her/his character’s personalities. Authors use five methods: • Character’s physical description, • Character’s words and actions, • Other character’s words and actions pertaining to the character at hand, • Direct comments from the narrator, • Objects of importance Ms. T’s unofficial method
Edvard Munch “The Scream” • What effect is Munch trying to create? • Color? Contrast? • Brush strokes? • Lines? • What is the mood of the piece? • How would you characterize this man? Does his plight relate to anyone in the book?
“The Face of War”Salvador Dali • How is Dali characterizing war? How do you know? • What effect does he create? How does he do it? • What is Dali’s message about war? How might it compare to Ninh’s message?

Basic Rules for Writing About Literature: • T.A.G. your intro (Title – Author – Genre) • Italicize novel title every time you use it • When writing about literature, use simple present tense consistently throughout • Do not use personal pronouns: I, me, you, us instead use: one, readers, audiences • Write about the events in chronological order • Focus on how the author is crafting the text
Introductions & Conclusions • Don’t spend lots of time writing a flowery introduction; while a good hook or interesting starter is always appreciated, get to the juicy analysis as soon as possible! • Same goes for your conclusion, SO WHAT and be done! • Clear thesis: this should be a THEME, all questions ask you to address what message can be gleaned from this character (your theme is your THESIS)
Paragraphing ONE PARA = ONE IDEA • Remember 10th grade: P E E • Have a clear topic sentence • Supply plenty of support for this idea • Probably: 2-5 quotes per paragraph, depending on length of quotations • Conclusion or linking sentence
Quotations / Support / Evidence • Defend your ideas well • Look carefully at the fragment in which your characters come up – cite this often • Cite your quotes properly • One text = First quote: (Ninh 98), all after that (99) • Blend quotations smoothly into your writing: • Fully explain your quotes, for they cannot speak for themselves. BUT, do not refer directly to your quotes, “This quote says…,” “he means…” The art of incorporating quotes is not an easy one… • Contextualize your quotes and references to the text.
IB Essay Writing Tips • Look to the IB rubric– notice that 4 of the 5 categories consider your use of supporting examples. • Show your understanding of these two characters (in a balanced manner) • Respond to the question keep this at the heart of your essay • Don’t forget about literary conventions: methods of characterization, symbols, motifs, conflict, resolution • Organize ideas logically Claim + Evidence = Warrant • This is take home: your language should be near flawless!
Thesis Check • Hoa’s sacrifice shows readers Ninh’s message about war. • Hoa’s sacrificial act suggests the rape of Vietnam and shows Ninh’s belief that those who were ravaged must be remembered if there is to be any hope for future reparations. What is that message?
Thesis Check • Review your thesis – take a few quiet minutes to refine it • Exchange with your neighbor, check to make sure your neighbor actually has a statement s/he can PROVE
“Bacchanale” Salvador Dali A bacchanale is a dramatic musical composition (dance or song), often depicting a drunken revel
Sacrifice But for those still living to know that the kindest most worthy people have al fallen away, or even been tortured, humiliated before being killed, or buried and wiped away by the machinery of war, then this beautiful landscape of calm and peace is an appalling paradox, Justice may have won, but cruelty, death, and inhuman violence have also won.
