  3. Why study law?

  4. What We Offer • A qualifying (ordinary) law degree in Scots law (LL.B.) • Successful completion of compulsory subjects qualifies for entry to Diploma in Legal Practice • Range of additional elective classes available

  5. What We (Don’t) Offer • Further 1 year (full-time) study required to gain an Honours degree • Further 1 year Diploma (full-time) and work-based training required to become solicitor or advocate • Compulsory subjects do not cover all pre-requisites for Faculty of Advocates • Entry to English legal profession requires further conversion course

  6. What We Offer 4 categories of students: • Full-time undergraduates (school leavers) • Full-time graduate entrants • Part-time graduate entrants • Part-time undergraduates (adult returners)

  7. Period of Study / Acceleration

  8. Period of Study / AccelerationPart-Time students may submit an application to accelerate. If successful this will reduce their period of study by one year however, your fee payment will amount to the same as studying all years. Reducing period of study does not mean reduction in fees.

  9. Application to AccelerateRequeststo accelerate will normally be approved if: - Allclasses have been passed at the first attempt. - Student has good grounds to do so. - Academicgrades are at a standard which the advisor feels the student could cope with the additional workload. - Applications with an overall average grade of less than 50% will normally lead to a rejection of a request for acceleration.

Transferring from Part-Time to Full-Time Study (or vice versa)You must first contact the part-time LLB Advisor of Studies.Application can only be made after 1 year of study.This route is not normally open to Graduates.Applications must be made via the Internal Transfer Form.Credits already accumulated can normally be carried forward.Transfer from full-time to part-time study may also be possible – each case will be considered on its merits.

  13. Fees 2013/14: Full-Time Graduate Entry (tbc by Faculty) - Students on full-time graduate entry programme are unable to accelerate.- All fees are subject to an annual increase.

  14. Fee Payments Students can opt to pay their fees in 3 instalments. More information can be obtained from the Finance Office. 3 instalments: first instalment due at registration second – mid-December third – early March.

  15. Funding Graduates are not normally eligible for funding via SAAS and may wish to consider: • Employer Sponsorship • Graduate Development Loans

  16. Funding for Part-Time Study SAAS Part-Time funding rules: Funding will cover SCQF Level 7-10. The income eligibility threshold will increase from £22,000 to £25,000

AttendancePart-Time Evening StudySemesters: 2 x 12 week semesters (Semester 1 begins 24/09/13)Students are expected to commit to the following contact time each semester:Lectures: 2 Evenings per week normally between 6-8pmTutorials: Every second Saturday from Week 5 (approx 2 x 1 hr)Part-Time students have the option to study alongside full-time students during the day if they so wish.

AttendanceGraduate Entry Full-Time StudySemesters2 x 12 week semesters (Semester 1 begins 24/09/13)Students are expected to commit to the following contact time each semester:Lectures and Tutorials: Can be scheduled any time between Mon-Fri, 9-5pm with Tutorialsnormally taking place from Week 4 every 2 weeks (4 x 1hr).Students will study along side other Full-Time students.

Examinations / AssessmentAll exams will take place during the day at the end of each semester:January (2 weeks) May (3 weeks)There is also a re-sit diet in AugustMost compulsory subjects have examinations.Some electives are 100% coursework assessment.Some modules may have group coursework and/or group presentations.

  24. University SystemsStudents are required to use the University systems of Pegasus and MyPlace:Pegasus – Is your University student record, you will access this when registering, changing your curriculum, amending personal details and to view your examination timetable and results. You will also receive announcements via Pegasus on a regular basis. MyPlace – Is a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and used to maintain course information (handbooks), upload and download essay and use discussion forums. You will also receive regular announcements regarding class informationand be able to sign up for tutorials.

Potential Further StudyAfter successful completion of the LL.B. qualification, the Law School at Strathclyde offers further opportunities for study.Honours and Diploma study is possible however students would need to follow the full-time programme of study.Other postgraduate (LL.M/MSc) opportunities offered are available:AdvocacyConstruction Law Criminal Justice and Penal Change Human Rights International Economic LawInternational Law & Sustainable Development Internet Law & PolicyMediation & Conflict ResolutionEmployment and Labour LawClimate Change: Law and Policy
