1st Amendment • Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press: or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances

States that congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, it has been under much scrutiny from our supreme court justices over the years. Has two clauses, the establishment clause prohibits the government from passing legislation to establish an official religion or preferring one religion over another, the free exercise clause prohibits the government, in most instances, from interfering with a persons practice of their religion
