Meet the Organisms • Darkling Beetles • Isopods
Observe Your Organisms • Observe your organisms. • Record what you notice and be sure to compare and contrast them. • Share out and discuss.
Darkling Beetles (Tenebrio) • Antenna • Head • Abdomen • Thorax Legs
Darkling Beetles (Tenebrio) • An insect. • Has 3 body parts (head, thorax, and abdomen). • Has 3 sets of legs. • Has 2 antenna to sense the environment around them. • They are the adult form of mealworms. • They go through metamorphosis in their life cycle. • They have wings but cannot fly.
Isopods (Armidillidium) • Antenna • Segmented Body • Legs
Isopods (Armidillidium) • Isopod is a Greek word • Iso = “similar or equal” • Pod = “foot” • They have segmented bodies and 7 sets of legs. • All 14 of their legs function the same. • We have Armidillidium (roly-poly) isopods which can roll into a ball. • They have a dome shaped, armor like shell. • They come in a variety of colors.
Vocabulary • Variable Something that can be changed. • Isopod An organism with a segmented body an even number of legs on both sides. • Darkling Beetle An insect with three body parts and three sets of legs. They have wings but cannot fly. They are dark in color.

Review Our Focus Question: • How can we determine what type of environment isopods and beetles prefer? • We will conduct two controlled experiments to test the variables of moisture and light.
