Latin American Relations: • Kennedy wanted to improve relations with Latin America • Proposed the Alliance for Progress • Series of cooperative aid projects with Latin American governments • Promised aid to Latin American governments • Over 10 years, these nations would receive roughly $20 billion in aid • Supported real reform in Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, and Central American nations • Some of these nations had rulers who used their funding to maintain their power

Space Race • 1961 = USSR Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin becomes the first man to orbit the earth • Increased tensions between the US and the USSR led to the space race • Each nation wanted to dominate space to enhance their positions on earth • Kennedy wanted Americans to be the first to reach the moon • Congress pushed to make this a reality
