  5. History • Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492 • First permanent settlement established in 1649 by Puritans • Did allow slavery • Slavery abolished on August 1, 1838

  6. Culture • About 305,000 people in the Bahamas • Christianity is the dominant religion • Other religions include Greek Orthodox, Jewish, Mormon, and some Atheists(not religious) • Most speak English • Ethnic groups include Black 85%, White 12%, and Asians and Hispanics 3%
