Co-founded by Kristin Hedger (KMM) and Charissa Rubey (Dakota Micro) • Purpose: • Assist small and medium-sized firms do business with the DoD • Help startups gain access to the defense market • Assist businesses advance to the next level by tapping into the defense market • Vision: To build business, strengthen community and better North Dakota and our country. DDA BACKGROUND

  3. Provide greater marketplace visibility Promote prime contract opportunity awareness Provide R&D opportunities Provide a “bridge” from our state to defense industry decision makers Create more high-tech education opportunities to lead to higher paying jobs in ND Objectives

  4. 30 members range from: • Traditional home grown mfg.-Killdeer Mountain Manufacturing • Cutting edge - Alien Technology &Info Tech • Solutions Provider -XIO Strategies, and the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute at NDSU. • Focus: • Secure contracts conducive to collaboration that include machining, production, fabrication, consulting, supply chain management, RFID products, training, education and research. Alliance members

We continue to work with N.D. universities and colleges to develop/refine curriculum in high-tech areas. • Connect N.D. students with N.D. and worldwide businesses. • Real world exposure for students • Students learn more about N.D. opportunities here at home • Exposure to worldwide connections that they can bring back to ND • Businesses engage a young capable workforce DDA Internship Program

  6. NDSU Research Corridor-2002, studies reveal that this project has generated $759 million in positive economic impact and has created over 10,000 jobs in the Red River Valley Region. This trend is expected to double by 2015-which means we need properly educated and experienced people to work these jobs. Offering internships and acquiring degrees in areas of high-technology, engineering and manufacturing will be important to the area. (dorgan.senate.gov) Background- observing successful models

  7. ND proves to have the fastest-growing research industry in the nation (Milken Institute, June 2008). In 2005 65% of ND graduates were employed within the state or re-enrolled in a ND college. Fields with the highest retention rates include Business Administration Support (90%), Allied Health (85%), and Interdisciplinary Studies (85%). BACKGROUND- Continued

  8. The DDA will grow opportunities . DDA and Operation Intern (program based from ND Dept of Commerce) have partnered to raise awareness about matching funds to employers offering paid internships. Benefit to Business- skilled energetic employers, and offset funds for the additional overhead. Benefit to Students- Learn, experience, engage in with a perspective employer at home .   9. DRS is one of the fastest-growing defense contractors on the globe with a revenue of over $3 billion annually and employs thousands. President, Jerry Sinn, hailing from Garrison, ND wants to give back. Offering internships to ND students is just one way he is doing that. Internships in Advanced Weapons System Division for Program Management. REACHING BEYOND, REMAINING CONNECTED

  10. . DDA will expand on this idea and provide Program Management & Engineering programs for students in a range of fields. Reaching beyond, remaining connected- enables students to work with major corporations elsewhere in the global marketplace, yet bring their lessons learned home to North Dakota businesses.   12. Operation Intern is a targeted program through the Department of Commerce to foster relations with businesses and N.D. students, provide matching funds for internships, and aid with compliance. Kayla Effertz, Internship Coordinator is attending the BSC location and will provide more information. DDA and operation intern partner
