Moving Forward is a university-wide initiative to: enhance the student experience; improve progression rates; provide greater support for staff in developing and implementing strategies to address transition and progression issues. The project commenced in October 2007 and will continue until December 2009. www.academy.gcal.ac.uk/movingforward/
Moving Forward represents a coordinated institutional strategy for transition and progression, and evidence-based practice which centres on partnership across the whole of the institution. The aim is to develop and implement a Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) Transition and Progression Framework in three phases. The Framework will be accessible for staff as an online resource and will provide a focal point for reflection, discussion and sharing of good practice. www.academy.gcal.ac.uk/movingforward/
Moving Forward GCU Context: GCU is a post-1992 university with a large number of students from disadvantaged backgrounds. There is also a very high percentage of students entering the university after completing HNC/Ds at college (most of whom enter at Level 2 or 3). GCU has a highly heterogeneous student group. www.academy.gcal.ac.uk/movingforward/
Moving Forward Phase One (October 2007-May 2008) 1. Identification of: issues associated with transition; causes of poor progression. 2. The development and approval of GCU Transition and Progression Framework. www.academy.gcal.ac.uk/movingforward/

Moving Forward Phase One (October 2007-May 2008) Identification of issues by: evaluating the student experience; consultative process with key stakeholders across the university (senior management, teaching and support staff, learner support staff, library and IT staff, Student Association, and CRLL); review of existing academic structures, incl. programme management and curriculum; research on first-year student experience, incl. data from GCU’s own projects. www.academy.gcal.ac.uk/movingforward/
Moving Forward Phase One (October 2007-May 2008) 2. Development of GCU Transition and Progression Framework based on: findings of the research and the consultative process; a Moving Forward event (20/05/2008) to discuss outcomes of student and staff consultation, and gain approval for the Framework. Additionally, the development of the Framework will be integrated within the revised GCU Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy (LTAS). www.academy.gcal.ac.uk/movingforward/
Moving Forward Phase Two (June 2008-September 2008) 1. Supporting the implementation of the Framework. 2. Development of School Action Plans for transition and progression (based on the Framework) including: evaluation; monitoring; review. www.academy.gcal.ac.uk/movingforward/
Moving Forward Phase Three (October 2008- December 2009) 1. Development of strategies at School level. 2. Evaluation of impact: by combining quantitative and qualitative data, such as progression rates and student feedback. www.academy.gcal.ac.uk/movingforward/
